This qualifying paper describes the identification, treatment decisions, and conservation of a nineteenth-century Chinese kesi or "carved silk" tapestry. A review of the origins of kesi first places this textile in historical context. Notes on the pictorial symbolism of the textile's motifs follow, and presentation of relevant comparanda help to explain the kesi's intended function. The kesi contains metal threads, painted and inked elements, and is in overall poor condition-any one of these factors would require careful consideration; together they demand a multi-pronged approach to making treatment decisions. The second section of the paper surveys the special conservation challenges posed by this textile and explores one of these problems - metal threads - in depth. An investigation into the conservation of metal threads, in particular the type found in this textile (gilded paper wrapped around a silk core), outlines the challenges of cleaning textiles containing similar fibers in similarly poor condition. The third and final section consists of a conservation report (condition report, treatment proposal, and post-treatment report). These describe the textile in technical detail, outline treatment decisions made and their rationales, and document the steps taken to conserve and stabilize the kesi .
