This dissertation argues that art affords a unique mode of being freely at home in the world. Literature shows itself to be an especially potent medium for artistically negotiating the complexities of our bureaucratized society, which systematically monetizes all relations. The free form of the novel allows it to accurately represent such wrongful social conditions without obscuring what genuine freedom and intimacy we nevertheless do achieve. For this reason, the novel is capable of providing an appropriately critical mode of reconciliation: a rational experience of being at home-however imperfectly, however partially-in the world. Literature will not solve our social problems, but it can expose cracks in systems of oppression. In addition to deepening and expanding self-knowledge, literature is a non-instrumental mode of communication capable of forging new bonds of genuine human solidarity.
