Over the past few decades, one of the most debated and widely discussed psychological constructs has been the concept of mental toughness (Jones, 2002). While currently the psychological community has yet to come to a consensus on a definition, various researchers have constructed assessment tools with the aim of identifying and quantifying the concept. This study aims to examine the relationship between mental toughness and on-field performance in professional baseball players, as well as test previously established relationships between mental toughness and age and experience. In a quantitative research study, 166 participants were recruited from a Major League Baseball team's minor league teams. These participants were administered a demographics questionnaire and the Mental Toughness Questionnaire 48 (MTQ48), one of the leading quantitative measures that examines the psychological construct through self-report. MTQ48 scores were than compared to a selection of the participants' performance-related statistics (as measured by OPS+, ERA+, and WAA) and demographic information to explore any relationship between mental toughness and athletic success. After employing a series of t-tests and regression analyses, performance-related statistics did not have a statistically significant relationship with high MTQ48 scores, rejecting the primary hypothesis of the study that higher mental toughness helps predict better performance. The results additionally present a challenge to the hypothesis that players with more experience would score higher on the MTQ48, as a negative relationship was consistently found between the two. No relationship was found between age and MTQ48 scores. Finally, potential limitations, clinical relevance, and suggestions for future research based on the findings are discussed.
