As an intern with the United Culinary Workers (UCW), I initiated an Action Inquiry Method (AIM) project with two other interns and a volunteer to help develop a legal aid program to assist clients of the UCW in local and federal civil matters. We wanted to contribute to UCW's goal to develop and coordinate legal services to address the poor legal options for workers in the food and culinary service industry related to their working conditions. In the eight weeks of working together we conducted seven meetings and three cycles of action and reflection to collaborate on various projects assigned to us by the UCW. We developed our ability to work collaboratively together which could support the initial purpose or any other priorities given to the interns. We discovered we were not positioned to lead toward progress on our initial goal, but we could help the UCW by bringing AIM to our assigned tasks as interns, and by learning new skills important to navigating in a legal environment. Initially skeptical interns embraced the AI method and the leadership process and practices I brought to the inquiry. We learned how a non-profit organization works, experienced the power of AI, and got clearer on our personal next steps. By the end of our project we had contributed in many small ways to the effective functioning of the office so that the managers could more directly pursue a coordinated legal aid program.
