Employee engagement has become a popular concept in various companies and among academics and practitioners alike. In 2013, the US was recorded to have lost about $300 billion as a result of unengaged employees (Cherian & Farouq, 2013). Research carried out in the retail industry also suggested that there needed to be an improvement in employee engagement levels of frontline employees. The purpose of the exploratory qualitative study was to explore strategies that were used by managers in the retail industry to engage employees to achieve job satisfaction within the organization. The conceptual framework that was used for the research study was based on the employee engagement theory by Kahn (1990). The research study involved a snowball sample of 10 managers from retail stores in the Forest Park Community in the Columbus Ohio area. The criterion for selecting the managers was based on their successes in creating and using strategies that engaged employees to achieve job satisfaction within the organization. In-depth semi-structured interviews were used to collect information from the participants based on their experiences with employee engagement in the organization. The credibility of the findings was improved using member checking and triangulation involving direct observation and a review of website data. Three main themes were identified using Yin's five-step data analysis and these include effective communication, incentives, and manager-employee relationships as strategies that managers used to engage employees to achieve improved job satisfaction levels. The findings of the research study may help managers to improve employee engagement levels which, in turn, could lead to job satisfaction, and high productivity levels within the organization.
