Healthcare information technology has come a long way given the evolution of computer science. Leaders of medical facilities have changed the way they transfer patient information across environments. The process has become streamlined. When information is exchanged via, phone, fax, verbal communication, email, and, paper documentation, there are potential risk factors for illegally releasing a patient's private health information. Leaders of medical facilities choose the electronic transfer method as a means of sending clinical data across facilities. Electronic health records (EHR) are a critical element used during a patient's treatment; thus the adoption of EHR has primarily increased. Studies show that not every facility utilizes the same processes and procedures when sending patient information and that many medical professional found EHRs were easier to navigate and understand. Major medical hospitals provide primary EHR systems with far more bandwidth than those supplied in smaller facilities. The adoption of EHR systems has the potential to become the only reliable tool for medical facilities to streamline the transmission of patient information. Examining the adoption rate of EHR systems showed how medical facilities controlled and managed clinical data and patient information between facilities. Of particular interest in this study was the functionality between small chain medical offices and hospital systems and the subsequent effects on quality patient care. EHR plays a vital and irrefutable role in the delivery of quality patient care.
