This dissertation addresses the phenomenon of women's sports aggression through a qualitative study, which answers the research question, "How do female recreational ice hockey players describe the experience of sports aggression?" A sample of eight recreational women's hockey players were interviewed. Through one-on-one semi-structured interviews, the participants discussed their experiences of aggression while playing hockey. These interviews were analyzed and produced meaningful themes about aggression, including the experience of conflicting morals and values, the influence of many social factors, and the dynamic relationship between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. The findings aligned with previous literature, particularly the ideas presented by Bandura's social learning theory and Kohlberg's moral reasoning theory. Additional research exploring women's paradoxical identity causing cognitive dissonance was also supported. These findings may be influential not only within the field of psychology but also with hockey professionals. Sports psychologists may use the results to work with athletes and improve performance. Hockey professionals may use the research to continue to develop coaching protocols to encourage appropriate aggression while discouraging detrimental aggression, as well as adapt the presentation of aggression within the culture of hockey to a healthier view.
