Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2017.
For centuries, ancient Chinese people preferred to use pillows made of ceramic rather than feathers or foam, which were different in form to Western equivalences. The oldest ceramic pillows are more than 1000 years old, made during the reign of the Sui Dynasty (581--618). Ceramic pillows went through many changes during the historical periods of the Sui, Tang, Five dynasty, Liao, Song, Jin, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. This household item changed in shape, size, color, function, and decoration. Craftsman made ceramic pillows not only as practical, daily-use devices, but also to provide high aesthetic value to furnishings, and to serve a social-cultural function. However, such a valued category that has an important status in the ancient China, why it was undervalued nowadays, which is a sobering thought. Thus, this thesis aims to provide readers who might be interested in, or who collect Chinese ceramic pillows, a precise introduction to their cultural value and social value. By introducing the concept and definition of the topic, it attempts to take unearthed archaeological excavation objects and museum collection pieces as its main focus, discussing a series of problems, including development phases, shapes, functions, decoration techniques, and workmanship. Then, using information about selling prices from Sotheby's and Christie's auction data from 2001 to 2017 to illustrate a market value and preference of ceramic pillows.
