Background: Research has shown that a lack of knowledge about sepsis among staff nurses can lead to inaccurate sepsis screenings, delayed identification and treatment, and higher risks of mortality for elderly hospitalized patients.

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to determine whether an evidence-based educational intervention would lead to an increase in the accuracy of sepsis screenings performed on the elderly patients at the acute care for the elderly (ACE) unit of a Northern California hospital.

$a
Theoretical Framework: The Gestalt learning theory and the Iowa model for evidence-based practice were used as frameworks for this project.

Project Method and Design: A quantitative, non-experimental method, with a pre-post intervention design was adopted for this project. A dependent samples t-test was used to assess the statistical difference between the pre- and post-intervention sepsis screenings.

$a
Data Results: The results of the data analysis showed a significant increase (p = .007) in the accuracy of sepsis screenings performed by the 34 nurse participants after the educational intervention, with a mean increase of 22.06%.

Implications: The results indicated that the educational intervention was effective in increasing the accuracy of sepsis screenings performed on the elderly patients at the ACE unit of this Northern California hospital. Future investigations should focus on how a similar intervention could positively impact nurses' overall compliance with the sepsis bundles and consequently reduce the mortality of elderly patients with sepsis.
