The Effect of a Peer Counseling Support Program on Breastfeeding Initiation, Duration and Exclusivity among Low-Income Hispanic Women by Danilo Bernal This paper describes a doctoral clinical scholarly project designed to implement an evidenced-based intervention that is focused on education and promotion of breastfeeding among low-income Hispanic mothers. It is a collaborative effort between the Ventura County Women's, Infant & Children (WIC) Program and the Ventura County Ambulatory Care Clinics in the City of Oxnard. This project aims to bridge the gap in evidence-based research demonstrating that peer counseling is effective in increasing the initiation, duration and exclusivity of breastfeeding among low-income Hispanic women. A randomized, prospective, unmasked, controlled project in which participants were recruited from two local public health clinics were assigned either to an intervention or control group (N = 40). A convenience sampling of pregnant women was followed up to 3 months postpartum. Breastfeeding peer counseling services were provided by WIC using telephone contacts. A final total of 36 participants were included in the final assessment of breastfeeding rates using adapted WHO questionnaires. The proportions of exclusive breastfeeding between the treatment and control groups was found to be statistically different at 12 weeks (chi2 = 13.42, p = 0.01). The mean breastfeeding duration in weeks of the control group was also statistically different from the mean breastfeeding duration of the treatment group after 12 weeks (M = 12.00, SD = 0.00), t (17) = --2.81, p = 0.01, 95% CI [--3.89, --0.56]. These findings demonstrate that peer counselling is an effective measure to increase the exclusivity and duration of breastfeeding among low-income Hispanic mothers.
