Thesis (Ed.D.)--Saint Mary's College of California, 2018.
The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore what impact, if any, a spiritually-focused Living-Learning Community (LLC) had on the spiritual development of 16 student participants at a small, faith-based college. LLCs are considered a high impact practice (HIP) because they promote a high level of student engagement (Kuh, 2008). College in general and HIPs in particular are ideally designed to promote students' spiritual development as they challenge old values and find new purpose (Parks, 2000). Therefore, this study was designed to identify if a LLC environment influences the spiritual development of its participants. Participants described how their time in the LLC shaped their spiritual development in three distinct and yet interrelated ways. First, the LLC was a relational experience that involved peer-to-peer interactions, learning how to address conflict, and navigating the tension between isolation and vulnerability. Secondly, the LLC was described as a special and unique experience promoting a new awareness and opportunities to experience authentic community. Lastly, the LLC was viewed as a spiritual experience where students identified their spirituality as a deeply personal experience and yet interrelated to the relationships of the community. From these findings, several implications for campus leaders were suggested, as well as areas for future research necessary to promote students' spiritual development within higher education in general and within a LLC in particular.
