The war in Syria caused Syrians' hope, families and country to be broken; and caused an enormous number of Syrians to escape their country, which led to a Syrian refugee crisis. In response to the Syrian crisis and as of January 2017, the Government of Canada has welcomed 40,081 Syrian refugees to Canada. Refuging to a new country is accompanied by the attempt to adapt to the host country's practices including dietary practices. Diet acculturation is a complicated process where refugees or immigrants are forced to discover new ways of consuming traditional foods, adopt new foods, and/or eliminate other foods from their diets. The purpose of this phenomenological case study was to explore how Syrian refugees narrate and reflect upon the ways in which their diets have acculturated since their arrival in Southern Ontario. Participants were government-assisted Syrian refugees who were at least 18 years old. A researcher-constructed semi-structured interview and a field journal were utilized to collect data that were analyzed using inductive coding, second-cycle-coding and thematic analysis. Qualitative analysis of the generated data revealed three key themes: 1) Food is identity 2) Perceptions of diet, meal patterns, and lifestyle changes 3) Health perceptions of host country's diet versus traditional diet. The results of the study will assist health care providers in understanding Syrian refugees' dietary and nutrition needs.
