This thesis explores examples of art that touch on aspects of motherhood, from an idealized mother-child relationship, to the uncomfortable bodily changes, and all those in-between. It seeks to point out the battles within feminism, the difficulties in acceptance for feminist art, and the refusal for both to acknowledge diverse aspects of being a woman due to their confrontational nature. By looking at what is available for motherhood art, this thesis will examine themes that are only recently being acknowledged by scholars, and proposes that a general understanding of all aspects of being a woman and mother will aid in the acceptance needed for women and minorities of all facets to be considered valid and equal. Fifty years after the Feminist Movement and almost one hundred since women won the right to vote, there is still much work to be done, and it is through art that an essential dialogue can flourish on a subject that will never diminish.
