Leadership and the factors that affect the soldiers' intent to re-enlist was the focal point of this qualitative research study. One of the main goals of the Army National Guard is retaining soldiers. The Army National Guard has a staffing issue which affects the security of this nation. Retention in the Army National Guard is vital to the security of this nation as there are many times in which Army National Guard units are mobilized to serve many missions that may be domestic or foreign. This study explored leadership skills as it relates to soldiers' intent to re-enlist based on leadership styles, financial compensation, personal obligations, and deployment. The theoretical framework involved transformational, transactional, and authoritarian leadership theories. The methodology that used was a qualitative research case study which included data collection through the implementation of a survey and an interview. A total of 11 soldiers participated in the survey and interview. The participants represented in the study were from all age groups, demographics, and ranks. These soldiers represented five Louisiana Army National Guard units. The research instrument was self-designed by the researcher. The data gained, was recorded and transcribed via NVIVO software. NVivo 12 software was used to assess word occurrences and catchphrases. The results illustrated that many soldiers favor transformational leadership, are dependent on careers external from the Louisiana Army National Guard, are often away from family, and that soldiers understand that deployments are highly possible. The implications of this study indicated that effective leadership could increase retention. Future research of soldiers serving 10 years or less on a larger scale could provide more data, as well as provide more answers and recommendations. Future practices should involve using external resources for extensive leadership training, continuous surveys of soldiers regarding the research questions, effective career counseling, and allocating more funds to recruits to retain soldiers.
