Thesis (Ph.D.)--Adler School of Professional Psychology, 2018.
Due to the influence of psychiatric descriptive psychiatry and symptom based taxonomy as outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), the researcher sought to understand its relationship to counselor characteristics. This correlational exploratory study analyzed the relationship among counselor characteristics, theoretical orientation, and belief in the medical model of mental illness among masters in counseling students. The study also compared demographic variables in order to better understand the relationship among the measures and results. A sample (n = 117) was collected from the Midwestern United States at Adler University, in Chicago, IL from students currently enrolled in a counseling program. Six different measures were utilized in this study; demographic information (10 items), Lewis, Lacasse, and Spaulding-Givens (2010) Mental Illness Beliefs Inventory (20 items), Davis' (1980) Interpersonal Reactivity Index (28 items), Worthington and Dillon's (2003) Theoretical Orientation Profile Scale-Revised (18 items), the Tafarodi and Swann (2001) Self-Liking/Self-Competence Scale-Revised (16 items) scale, and Goldberg's (1992) International Personality Item Pool--Big Five (50 items). A total of 142 questions across all instruments were provided the participants. Results indicated significant relationships among some of the variables. The personality trait of conscientiousness significantly correlated with belief in the medical model. In addition, theoretical orientations styles such as cognitive/behavioral, psychodynamic and family systems, positively correlated with belief in the medical model. Empathy and self-efficacy had no significant correlations with belief in the medical model, signaling these traits exist outside and separate from the constructs of the DSM. There were also significant correlations between CACREP and the MIBI subscales. Finally, if the participant was in their clinical practicum the participant had a statistically significant increase in their perspective taking (cognitive empathy).
