Bible-based counseling has been in use in the counseling field starting in the early 1970s with the theories of Adams and Crabb. There has not been much development of this phenomenon or research of the recipients of this type of service. This study sought to demonstrate how Bible-based counseling is perceived by evangelical Christians as an approach for addressing mental health issues. The first research question addresses how evangelical Christians perceive Bible-based counseling as an approach for achieving positive mental health. The sample of this qualitative exploratory case study design included 11 participants from a church in Tempe, Arizona. The sampling strategy was using a flyer to bring about awareness and then participants were chosen from a purposive sample of the respondents. The data collection involved three sources of data: an open-ended interview, a participant's journal, and a focus group of five from the interview group. The data were analyzed by themes that emerged from the hand-coded analysis. The participants were people who had been to Bible-based counseling and this is one of the first studies to measure responses from recipients of services. If Bible-based counseling can become a more regularly used and available resource for evangelical Christians, the people who need stability with mental health issues will have a resource that truly embraces their belief system and value base they deeply desire. The key themes that emerged were who is an Evangelical Christian, the efficacy of Bible-based counseling to address challenges, and the tenets of Bible-based counseling.
