The effects of a grant-funded, school-sponsored wellness program using Fit Bits were objectively assessed in this study of 68 participants in a small, rural community in the southeastern part of the United States. An experimental design format was used over a 6-month period to measure the dependent variables, weight, body mass index, chest, waist, and hip inches, and blood pressure of all participants at 1-month intervals. A comparison was conducted between study participants who used a Fit Bit and those who did not to determine whether the Fit Bit made a significant difference in wellness outcomes. In addition, pre- and postsurvey data were collected from participants using a health risk questionnaire. Reentry data were also collected to determine reentry and new entry rates in this type of wellness program 1 year later.
