Thesis (M.A.)--University of Maryland, Baltimore County, 2017.
Numerous studies have investigated the role of storybooks in children's development. Yet, little is known about adults' preferences for and beliefs about children's books. This study examines if and how parents and teachers differ in their opinions about important storybook characteristics and the purpose of reading storybooks with preschool-age children. This study used individual in-person interviews of 31 preschool teachers and 36 parents from two private preschools in suburban Baltimore. Interviews included forced-choice and open-ended questions. The study did not find a clear pattern of differences between parents and teachers. According to parents and teachers, illustrations are the most important component of storybooks. Both groups strongly value storybooks for academic and educational purposes such as developing language and literacy skills and, to some extent, social and emotional skills. Future studies should examine who is choosing which books to read, what influences these decisions, and how these decisions change over time.
