The purpose of this study is to create and validate a questionnaire to assess an individual's awareness of vitamin D and its potential health benefits in college aged males and females. Results from the proposed study will provide a validated tool, for possible use in a clinical setting, to assess an individual's awareness of vitamin D with the ultimate goal of raising general awareness of the potential health benefits of vitamin D sufficiency. The criticality of vitamin D as an essential metabolic component across all phases of human development and life justifies early awareness of the vitamin's function and benefits. Despite evidence of its profound importance to human health, the most recognized consequences of vitamin D inadequacy such as osteoporosis and increased risk of falls, of lifelong vitamin D insufficiencies or deficiencies manifest themselves later in life. Young adults of college age were chosen as the target of this study as being mature enough to comprehend the impact and importance of vitamin D, while being young enough to implement a meaningful lifestyle change to maintain its lifelong sufficiency. This study utilizes the accepted, scientifically established methods of expert panel review and cognitive interview (CI) to develop an effective research tool in the form of a validated questionnaire to establish a baseline of public awareness. CI techniques are an accepted method of pre-testing questionnaires commonly used in federal government and survey organizations. Using CIs will help identify and eliminate problems in the questionnaire and improve the quality of the data collected.
