Types of stuttering (topography) have not been studied extensively in preschool children who stutter. Topography may distinguish between stuttering and nonstuttering preschool children and may help predict spontaneous recovery. Speech samples of 20 stuttering and 20 nonstuttering preschool children conversing with their mothers were analyzed for types of stuttering.

Both stutterers and nonstutterers produced the same topography, with the exception of the type known as struggle, which only stutterers exhibited. Stutterers produced significantly more stuttered disfluencies than did nonstutterers. Types of stuttering, possibly struggle, but especially multiple part-word and multiple whole-word repetitions may be indicators of spontaneous recovery or recovery due to treatment. A standard topographical classification system is needed for further research.
