We know much about church turnaround in the U.S. context and church growth in the Indonesian context. However, we do not know very much about church turnaround in the Indonesian context, particularly in Chinese background churches in Indonesia. Therefore, even though there have been several quantitative and qualitative research writings on church turnaround in the U.S. context and other parts of the world, factors that contribute to turnaround of Chinese background churches in the Indonesian context are still unknown. This qualitative, multiple-case-study research project attempts to discover factors that contribute to turnaround churches in the Indonesia. As a result of this study, factors that contributed to the four Chinese background churches in the Indonesian context could be understood and then described and compared. The main question in this study is what are the factors that contribute to turnaround of Chinese background churches in the Indonesian context? Its subquestions are: Who contributed to the turnaround? What activities contributed to the turnaround process? How do changes in the organization relate to the turnaround process? What other factors can be identified that contributed to the turnaround process? Data were gathered by interviews, observations, and archival documents. All data were analyzed and coded using a constant comparative analysis and memoing in order to develop within-case analyses and a cross-case analyses from four Chinese background churches. This study contributes to the theory for the missiological community by adding new knowledge of the unique factors that contribute to the turnaround churches in the Indonesian context. It also helps church leaders in Indonesia to revitalize their churches by helping them to understand the dynamics of their church organization and the practical strategies that produce growth. Then, they can apply effective ministry strategies for their churches.
