Life history indices can give insight to the status of a population that has no density estimates or data on population trends. Using various methodologies to calculate these indices can produce different results for the same index. The purpose of this study was to analyze different photo-identification methods used to calculate life history indices to determine any variations in results based on the method that was used and calculate life history indices for common bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus in waters near Savannah, Georgia. Several methods were used to examine seasonality of reproduction, and all methods provided similar results. There was a unimodal peak in seasonality in late spring (April-August), with most births occurring in May. Calf mortality was highest during the first year of life, 37%, and was calculated using the division method. Calf survivorship was calculated by determining how many calves were seen the following year with their mother divided by the total number of calves. First-year calf survivorship for dolphins near Savannah, Georgia was 63%. Methods used to calculate calf mortality and calf survivorship had little effect on results. In contrast, interbirth interval had different results depending on the method that was used, with a mean interbirth interval of 5.6 years for females with surviving calves (n=7). Methods used could provide different results that could be interpreted differently by managers. Methods chosen can dramatically affect biological conclusions and should therefore be made carefully.
