With a growing awareness of trauma and its impact throughout the lifespan, it is critical to identify effective methods of training therapists to treat trauma. TF-CBT is an empirically-supported treatment model that has provided wide-scale disseminations throughout the United States. Recently, researchers have begun to investigate why some trained trauma therapists do not implement the treatment model with fidelity. This study examined the influence of self-esteem, knowledge, and child trauma clinical beliefs on the implementation of the components that comprise the TF-CBT treatment model. Mediating relationships between self-efficacy, knowledge, child trauma clinical beliefs, and TF-CBT component use were also examined. Mental health practitioners (n = 304) who completed year-long TF-CBT learning collaboratives, completed the survey set for this study, which consisted of the following instruments: background information, Self-Efficacy for TF-CBT, Knowledge of TF-CBT, Child Trauma Clinical Beliefs Scale (CTCBS), and TF-CBT Components, which measures the frequency of TF-CBT components use.

For this study, multiple regression analysis was used to test the following hypotheses: a) knowledge of TF-CBT predicts the implementation of TF-CBT treatment components, b) self-efficacy of TF-CBT predicts the implementation of TF-CBT treatment components, and c) child trauma clinical beliefs predict the implementation of TF-CBT treatment components. Mediating effects of self-efficacy, knowledge, and child trauma clinical beliefs on TF-CBT component use were also examined.

The data did not support the hypothesis that knowledge of TF-CBT predicted the use of TF-CBT components. However, self-efficacy and child trauma clinical beliefs were shown to have statistical significance in predicting component use. Additionally, regression analysis revealed that child trauma clinical beliefs has a mediating effect on self-efficacy and component use. Limitations, implications for clinical practice, and recommendations for future research are then discussed.
