The purpose of the study was to investigate the impact of shared reading experiences on elementary developmentally handicapped students' attitudes toward reading. In this study, a shared reading program was developed for a class of nine elementary developmentally handicapped students to encourage them to help each other as they explored reading. The instructional routine provided a supportive classroom environment that encouraged reading demonstrations, active reading participation and independent reading practice, all components of a shared reading program. This instructional routine was investigated for nine consecutive weeks.

The study was designed to qualitatively assess students' attitudes toward reading prior to and after providing a shared reading experience to a class comprised of elementary developmentally handicapped students. Research for this ethnographic study was triangulated using several sources: survey, interview, and observation. Two areas formed the focus of the study: shared reading experiences and student attitudes.

In this study, convergence of the qualitative data collected verified that a shared reading experience with the use of predictable books fostered the participating students' attitudes positively. This study supported the view that shared reading was an effective instructional technique for application in the elementary developmentally handicapped reading classroom.
