Age at marriage is a very significant determinant of the first birth interval. The associations are negative in Shaanxi and the LDCs, reflecting both static and dynamic influences. The former states that Shaanxi (and the LDCs) has a substantial proportion of women married in their teenages and the underlying biological factors result in some stable negative curvilinear associations. However, such biological factors are neither necessary nor sufficient conditions for the associations. Volitional factors are also involved.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Age at marriage is a very significant determinant of the first birth interval. The associations are negative in Shaanxi and the LDCs, reflecting both static and dynamic influences. The former states that Shaanxi (and the LDCs) has a substantial proportion of women married in their teenages and the underlying biological factors result in some stable negative curvilinear associations. However, such biological factors are neither necessary nor sufficient conditions for the associations. Volitional factors are also involved.

The importance of the dynamic components has been understated in the literature. They represent the period effects which shift the levels or strength of the age-interval relationship. Some exogenous models are built to explain their effects. (1) Exogenous changes caused some delay in marriage against the couples' will, and led to volitional compensation towards a shorter first birth interval. The marriage policy after 1972 is the best example. The model can be generalized to include other exogenous factors. (2) The One-child Policy acted against the individuals' fertility preferences and caused most women to have short first birth intervals.

Hence, some policies intended to lower fertility have been offset by the compensatory actions, possibly by volitional coital regulation.

The above conclusions are supported by three alternative hypotheses--women's education, arranged marriage and premarital conceptions cannot explain the static and dynamic components observed.

The case of Shanghai is atypical--the age-interval association is negative in rural Shanghai, but slightly positive in urban Shanghai. The positive association is explained by endogenous responses involving considerations of the costs of marriage. The majority of women, however, had short intervals. Urban Shanghai is intermediate between the DCs' and LDCs' experiences.

The study provides a general framework for studying first birth intervals. It highlights the underlying mechanisms: the LDCs involve biological and exogenous responses and the DCs the endogenous ones. The timing of childbearing was not used for family planning in China, though it remains a viable option. The contribution of late marriage to the fertility decline in China should also be reassessed.
