He has been described as a master of the sentence and a consummate storyteller, a writer who represents an important step in the evolution of colloquial prose in the modern Japanese novel, and has been credited with reviving the use of humor in the novel and in literary criticism. These achievements are discussed in this study together with other means he used to draw critical attention to the convention of the shishosetsu (a prose narrative about the self), such as writing novels that parody the narrative techniques and the subject of the genre. It is suggested that this self-conscious manner of writing was one of his most important contributions to the vitality of the Taisho-period novel.
