, one of the foremost literary women of the Mid-Tang era. Although critical commentary on Xue has tended to focus on her gender, the thesis argues that she is in fact a poet of the "mainstream", capable of writing with the language and structure appropriate to a wide range of topics, whether traditionally "feminine" or not.

The first chapter surveys responses to Xue's works, and discusses her literary milieu and the problems of translating poetry written in literary Chinese. Biographical materials are then examined in terms of type-motifs found in the biographies of other Tang literata. Xue's life is placed in the context of social history, with particular consideration of her roles as courtesan, "Collator" for the.

yongwu , describe their subjects with both sensuous(' )(, ) and allegorical interest. Her encomia exhibit rhetorical figures and structures also found in English praise poetry. The parting poems range from formal to familiar while observing the decorums of other Tang dynasty poems of farewell. Poems on love and on the figure of the courtesan show Xue's use of the tradition of female persona poetry. Those occasioned by banquets, outings, gifts, and the like make use of the Chinese conventions for such poetry. The poems on war and banishment include the "Ten Partings" cycle, with its erotic paranomia. Religious themes appear in a group of poems on temples, shrines, and holy men. Western pastoral poetry provides a useful basis for understanding Xue's poems on human beings in the natural world. Four poems to other poets suggest views of poetry that are discussed in relation to the various poetics of Xue Tao's tradition. The conclusion examines the whole corpus of her work, and finds that her adept use of contemporary poetic conventions marks her as a self-aware, articulate member of the literary community of Mid-Tang China.
