Thesis (Ph.D.)--Cornell University, 1982.
A notable feature of Chinese literary theory in the Six Dynasties (222-589), as evidenced by the writing of the great critic Liu Hsieh (c. 465-522), is the considerable attention devoted to the effects of diction on style. This thesis attempts to clarify a few ways in which vocabulary contributes to stylistic differences. Frequency data compiled from the five-word line poems of two Six Dynasties poets, Hsieh Ling-yun (385-433) and Hsieh T'iao (464-499), provide the point of departure for an analysis of representative poems and the stylistic qualities that Chinese critics have associated with them.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The analytical usefulness of frequency studies is discussed in the Introduction. An illustrative frequency list is presented to show how the data provide evidence for certain trends in vocabulary usage: the high frequency of grammatical particles in Six Dynasties prose, as well as the declining usage of particles, the gradual decrease of abstract nouns, and the co-occurring rise of landscape vocabulary in the five-word line poetry of the period.

Chapter One presents an overview of the major differences between the primary vocabularies of Hsieh Ling-yun and Hsieh T'iao as derived from a comparative frequency table. The data indicate that Hsieh T'iao's vocabulary is more specific in reference to objects, time, place, and perceptual and textural qualities.

In Chapter Two, a group of poems by Hsieh Ling-yun is translated and discussed in connection with the idea of change and the stylistic category of the "fresh and the extraordinary." Unusual diction and innovative syntax are singled out as significant features of his style.

Chapter Three focuses on specific poems by Hsieh T'iao and considers the type of vocabulary that conveys his stylistic signature of "pure elegance." The frequent occurrence of intransitive verbs and quality-oriented attributives in his poetry is discussed.

The Conclusion suggests that differences in lexicon and style may reflect changes in poetic sensibility and aesthetic perspective that warrant further study. Included as an appendix to the thesis is the author's Concordance to the Five-Word Line Poems of Hsieh Ling-yun.
