The Chinese hamster is one of the few mammals known to be highly resistant to the muscle phase of Trichinella spiralis, which are eliminated by an intense myositis mounted soon after their arrival in host muscle. Trichinella pseudospiralis suppresses host inflammatory response in mice and its ability to overcome the innate resistance to T. spiralis in the Chinese hamster was examined in the present study.Subjects--Topical Terms:

A preliminary study was conducted on two groups of 2 month-old hamsters which received approximately 500 T. spiralis or 500 T. pseudospiralis infective larvae. The mean total of T. pseudospiralis recovered was 2862 (SD $\pm$ 679), more than ten times the number of T. spiralis recovered (225; SD $\pm$ 203). In this study the reproductive capacity index (RCI) for T. pseudospiralis was 5.75 (SD $\pm$ 1.37), over 12 times the RCI for T. spiralis (0.46 SD $\pm$ 0.41).
