South Africa's past and present is saturated in discrimination. Its infrastructure was molded by the violent subjugation of indigenous people, the appropriation of lands, forced migration, and the enforcement of unjust laws that destroyed the lives of Black African families. In light of these circumstances, Black South African families continue to function in the context of marginalization. Research in the protective parenting behaviors of South African caregivers that can improve the well-being of early adolescents is limited. Therefore, this study seeks to explore what are the affective and protective aspects of adult caregiving that influence the mental health (depression and manifestations of anxiety) and possible engagement in sexual situations among Black South African early adolescents. The findings indicate that family communication (frequency and comfort in discussing puberty, sex, sexually transmitted infections, negative peer influences, alcohol, and drugs) and caregiver monitoring (family rules, supervised/unsupervised time, and empathy) significantly predicts child manifestations of anxiety, depression, and risk of possible engagement in sexual situations. Caregiver well-being did not directly or indirectly influence child anxiety, depression, and possible engagement in sexual situations. The association between the independent and dependent variables also did not vary by function of the gender of the head of household. Findings from this study reinforce the need to strengthen South African caregiver's capacity to effectively communicate and monitor behaviors of youth.
