An institution whose time seemed to have come -- a museum for art by women. The National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) opened on April 7, 1987, in Washington, D.C. Founded at the cusp between second and third wave feminism, the museum expressed recognition of women's achievements, a celebration of their history, and a response to centuries of gender inequalities in the arts. Activists, most prominently the Guerrilla Girls, had been decrying the near-complete exclusion of women artists from mainstream museums for a number of years, and the NMWA presented a concrete solution to this problem, a chance to redress the inequities of women in the art world. Now thirty years old, the NMWA presents an opportunity not only to study the initial decades of development of a new museum of a new museum, but also to examine the issues and controversies surrounding the museum devoted to women in the arts. The purpose of this thesis is to assess the need for such an institution and its successes and shortcomings, both at the time it was created and now.
