Thesis (M.S.)--Western Illinois University, 2017.
This study followed a sequential mixed methods case study design to explore sense of community (SOC) and serious leisure in two Midwestern community theatres. SOC was examined primarily through the use of the Sense of Community Index 2 (SCI-2). Open-ended questions on the questionnaire along with participant interviews facilitated the exploration of serious leisure. Participants in this study reported average levels of SOC and found time to be the biggest drawback to participation in community theatre. This study suggests community theatre leadership has the opportunity to create and foster SOC for their participants. Through analysis of the interpretive data serious leisure emerged as a framework to examine the experiences of the participants. This development revealed that the participants were more individually focused than they were community minded. Serious leisure is an area which should be further explored in the realm of community theatre.
