In an effort to better understand how parents are supporting the emerging literacy of their kindergarten students, this study asked parents in a small, rural district what they did to help their student learn to read and write outside of school. Parents responded that they utilized various strategies including read-alouds, providing access to books, authentic writing practice, and environmental text. In addition, they shared that they were largely unaware of kindergarten standards, were surprised that their children had already progressed so quickly in their literacy practice, and were less concerned about academic rigor than they were about social and emotional learning. Findings indicate teachers can support families by informing them early about kindergarten standards and sharing evidence-based practices throughout the year.
