This study is about the development of an Advanced Placement Music Theory curriculum for Passaic Public Schools District. The Understanding by Design (UbD) curriculum model which follows a "backward design" approach is examined. The curriculum follows the UbD three stage design of establishing goals, performance tasks and learning strategies and strongly focuses on the development of enduring understandings and essential questions. The requirements for AP Music Theory set out by the College Board are also examined, as well as how the AP will assess whether a curriculum meets all the requirements. The curriculum is presented along with a syllabus for the course and a resource list of available teaching materials.
