Traditionally, middle school Social Studies classrooms are filled with dates, names, events, and facts that students are required to memorize in order to pass a unit test. The problem is that students often forget the facts once the test is complete; Essential Questions are an attempt to combat this notion by building a foundation of historical knowledge. Essential Questions are higher order questions that are broad in nature, and have more than one correct answer. This study was conducted in order to gauge whether implementing Essential Questions has a positive impact on students' ability to remember relevant information, and to begin to develop and sustain knowledge of the "big ideas" of history.
