Supporting menstrual hygiene management (MHM) in schools is recognized as an essential, yet often overlooked component to promoting the educational experiences of schoolgirls in low- and middle-income countries. Across settings, interviews with female students shed light on how challenges to effective MHM compromise school performance. As the association between MHM and education gains greater attention, researchers have called for more hard evidence that can demonstrate this link. The following study adds to the empirical literature in this field. It asks the research question: Do environmental provisions for MHM affect the math and reading achievement test scores among schoolgirls in Ethiopia? With data from the Ethiopia Young Lives School Survey, it uses hierarchical linear modeling to analyze information from 5,941 female students nested in 94 schools. Environmental provisions for MHM were defined as whether or not a school had sex-segregated toilets; water for washing in or near the toilet facilities; a place for girls to wash in privacy; a place for girls to wash menstrual rags; sex- segregated toilets and one additional MHM provision; and sex-segregated toilets and two additional MHM provisions. After controlling for factors at both the individual- and school-level, the study finds that environmental provisions for MHM were not associated with math and reading achievement test scores. Urban location at the school-level was significantly associated with higher reading and math test scores (p<0.05), while age and time to travel to school were significantly associated with higher math scores (p<0.05). Limitations to the study design and recommendations for future research are discussed.
