Thesis (M.A.)--Fashion Institute of Technology, State University of New York, 2018.
This paper examines the status quo of the art-secured lending market in the United States and China from the following perspectives: cultural difference, appraisal and valuation system, liquidity of collateral art, risk management, and technology support. Research shows that different cultures have shaped different business scenarios in both countries. Research also shows that the U.S. has a more regulated and standardized infrastructure for art loan services, whereas China has developed a unique market where financial institutions operate subject to its own rules. The comparative analysis serves to scrutinize the reasoning for current problems emerging in the Chinese art loan business, revealing the lack of professional valuation system, a regulated secondary market and utilitarian database. Considering the unique social and financial system in China, the American business model is inspiring and constructive, yet not completely applicable, to the Chinese art market. This paper assumes that China will adapt what can be learned from the U.S. into its own version.
