Thesis (M.S.)--Southern Methodist University, 2017.
The Mach-Zehnder Modulator (MZM) is routinely used in optical communication systems to implement both amplitude and phase modulation. Using Z-transform analysis, we derive a symbolic transfer function for a Mach-Zehnder Modulator (MZM) with two feedback paths added to the classic single stage finite impulse response (FIR) configuration. This transfer function allows us to leverage Z-transform properties to improve the slew rate of the device while maintaining an ideal extinction ratio. We also consider an architecture with optical gain added to both feedback paths and use the same Z-transform techniques to derive usable solutions. Cases are considered which demonstrate a slew rate increased by as much as 63 times the slew rate of a classic MZM and with an ideal extinction ratio. The methods presented in this thesis ease analysis of advanced photonic devices and offer tools for further optimization.
