The election of our first African American President, Barack Obama, brought with it racial resentment in the form of a new Tea Party movement. Although the Tea Party claims that their movement is all about smaller government and fiscal responsibility, some of their actions have lead others to believe otherwise. This study takes a qualitative approach in the form of a content analysis of U.S. Daily Newspapers online. Several articles were reviewed and characteristics were looked at and combined to form common themes. Additionally, this study uses a critical race theory lens to gain insights into the relationship between the Tea Party, President Obama, politics, and race. Findings include that although the Tea Party espouses government concerns, their movement has also created a climate where they feel they are this country's ideal Americans, and where those who do not conform to their ideology are excluded. Moreover, additional findings underscore the contributions a critical race theory approach makes, including accusations of Tea Party racism, supposed Tea Party colorblindness, and a lack of Tea Party interest convergence.
