Child life specialists utilize an array of skills in order to help children and families cope in the hospital. Particular to a hospitalized child that has endured physical and/or sexual abuse, the skills of a child life specialist are paramount at supporting their psychosocial needs. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine tools and techniques that child life specialists use to help children who have been physically and/or sexually abused cope in the hospital. Participants were four child life specialists enrolled in a graduate child life program and preparing to enter the field. Semi-structured interviews were completed using guiding questions and following up questions were asked when needed. The results indicated four main themes: (1) there is a desire for more education in regards to working with this demographic, whether it be through the hospital or classes, (2) participants relied on supervision and reflection to cope with the experiences, (3) lack of preparedness due to personal emotions as well as education and knowledge of working with these children, while utilizing a general technique of distraction, and (4) not being able to move past personal biases due to emotional responses and/or personal trauma.
