The purpose of the study was to examine how emotional maltreatment behaviors by coaches were perceived by athletes. First, a definition of positive coaching was established to connect past and existing research to toxic leadership in coaching. These toxic coaching behaviors were defined by emotional abuse (patterns of behaviors experienced directly by the athlete within a critical relationship role) and emotional harassment (unintentional or experienced indirectly occurring outside a critical relationship role). These perceptions were measured using the Coach-Athlete Relationship Emotional Maltreatment Scale (CAREMS). This research was conducted to better assist sports programs in identifying early signs of abusive and harassing behaviors, and the importance of athletic safety. Using a 19-item version of the Coach- Athlete Relationship Emotional Maltreatment Scale (CAREMS), information was collected from 110 participants (coaches and athletes), 18 years or older with any experience with high school or college athletics. Toxic behaviors were based on 5 subscales: performance-based disparagement, direct personal disparagement, embarrassing behaviors, indirect personal disparagement, and intimidating behaviors. Using an ANOVA, results were tested and supported for a significant difference in toleration of behaviors.
