Literary critics John Crowe Ransom and Cleanth Brooks, who founded the dominant New Criticism of the mid-twentieth century, and formalist art critics Roger Fry, Clive Bell, and Clement Greenberg offer insight to readers and viewers with their emphasis on structure, but philosopher and educator John Dewey's concept of "art as experience" makes possible a more holistic appropriation of works of literature and the visual arts. An examination of the works, writings, and interviews of museum founder Duncan Phillips, painter Mark Rothko, and poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti demonstrates that Dewey's way provides for broader, richer encounters with art and literature. The awareness of readers and viewers that they are empowered to interpret based on individual experiences, instead of relying on the opinions of professional critics, can enhance not just their response to works of art, but their understanding of what it means to be human.
