This paper utilizes the survey research method to explore the impact of advanced machine translation technology on Chinese language learners. The paper provides an outline of the advancements made in machine translation and natural language processing (Slocum, 1985; Wilks, 2014; Wu et al, 2016) and draws upon language learning motivation theory (Gardner & Lambert, 1972; Dornyei, 2001; Dornyei, 2005) to explain why many students, even in the face of potential replacement of the need for foreign language, would still be interested in learning a foreign language. The paper finds that most students still expressed that they themselves would still be willing to continue learning Chinese while expecting less and less of the overall population to be interested in learning foreign languages, especially difficult ones such as Chinese. Also found was a correlation between higher motivation and low trust in MT capability.
