Thesis (M.Ed.)--Mississippi College, 2017.
The rapid growth in technology and globalization created the need for a common global language, with English being the language of choice in most countries. Besides the quality of its lingua franca as a means of communication, over 85 percent of literature on information technology and business are in English; thus, it plays an imperative role in connecting different cultures across the globe. Saudi Arabia and China are some of the fastest growing economies, and learning English has become a necessity for individuals seeking to exploit opportunities in the international market. As a result, a necessary trend emerged in which more people desire to teach English as a second language. Although faced with various challenges for teaching in a foreign country and receiving varying responses from learners, the interest continues to grow for teachers to teach English.

This thesis explored challenges of teaching and learning English as a second language (ESL) in Saudi Arabia and China from the perspective of the history of teaching foreign language in each country, policies, class size and time for classes, textbooks, teachers, methodology and technology. One discovery is that the need for an international language has always existed, but different social-cultural and religious factors have acted as barriers.
