Many factors affect strategy in businesses. These factors extend from a company's external environment, as well as, their competitors. The purpose of this qualitative, case study was to explore the dimensions of learning patterns present in Motorola, a single S&P 500 company between 1976 and 2015, and how these patterns mirrored the financial performance of the company during the same time period. The overarching research question was: What were the patterns of Motorola's financial performance between the years of 1976 and 2015, and did the performance mirror the company's display of the dimensions of learning? The researcher utilized Watkins and Marsick's seven dimensions of learning to examine the financial performance of one learning organization included in Goh and Ryan's study. To collect data, the researcher surveyed literature written about learning Motorola in the context of demonstrating characteristics consistent with the seven dimensions of learning. Financial data were collected by surveying Motorola's annual reports as reported to US Security and Exchange Commission, over the 40-year period from 1976 through 2015. Using a procedure of coding, the researcher determined that empowering people toward a collective vision was the dimension most demonstrated by the learning organization. One may conclude that between 1980 and 2015 Motorola displayed characteristics consistent with the dimensions of learning, although not all dimensions were present at the same time. This dissertation provided insight for organizations and researchers regarding how an organization's learning strategies may mirror financial performance.
