The purpose of this study was to determine if the Taipei Evergreen College students' attitudes are influenced by demographic variables including gender, age, health status, household income, occupation, level of education, with whom they reside, marital status, and retirement status. It is also the purpose to examine the possibility of application of the Elderhostel model for Taiwanese older adults. The subjects of this study were comprised of all older adults 55 years or older who enrolled at the Taipei Evergreen College in the Fall 1997. Two research questions were addressed: (a) Are older Taiwanese adults' attitudes toward the Elderhostel program influenced by the demographic variables in terms of gender, age, health status, household income, occupation possessed, level of education, with whom they reside, marital status, and retirement status? (b) What is the possibility of using the Elderhostel model of residential educational programs for Taiwanese older adults?

The Statistical Analysis System (SAS) was used to complete the analysis of the data. The findings indicated that the attitudes of respondents in this study were only influenced by gender and health status. Female respondents reported they were more likely to participate in the Elderhostel than male respondents. Respondents who were in good health were more interested in participation than those who were in bad health regardless of gender. Both female and male respondents indicated that the primary reasons that influenced their potential participation were related to cognitive growth.
