This dissertation provides first-generation Korean-American fathers with tools to learn, understand, and resolve conflicts with their second-generation children. Literature has shown that across many cultures, there are positive correlations between a father's positive interaction and a child's positive cognitive, social, and emotional development (Lundahl, Tollefson, Risser, & Lovejoy, 2008). Since the Fatherhood Initiative was introduced in 2010 by President Barack Obama, there has been a boom in programs aimed at increasing the involvement of fathers in their children's lives. Father education programs have been found to have large positive effects when compared to control groups (Holmes, Galovan, Yoshida, & Alan, 2010). Unfortunately, there are very few programs for first-generation Korean-American fathers that consider cultural values, acculturation levels, and generational issues. A workshop for first-generation Korean-American fathers was created in response to this need. The workshop incorporates the most recent research and Adlerian parenting and mindful listening skills to help these fathers increase positive communication with their children. The workshop was reviewed by 9 experts in the field with experience working with Asian-American families and/or fathers. The review by the experts found the workshop to be engaging and helpful for the targeted population. Reviewers strongly endorsed the approachability of the workshop, finding the language palatable for non-professionals. Reviewers also found the workshop to be mindful of the cultural nuances and generational differences in the Korean American population. The author hopes that the workshop inspires the creation of additional programs, workshops, and manuals for multi-cultural fathers that increase their engagement in their children's lives.
