Thesis (M.A.)--Central Missouri State University, 1999.
The present study utilized the functional approach developed by Benoit and colleagues to analyze the 1994 Taipei mayoral debate, the first-ever televised political debate in Taiwan. Employing a thematic content analysis to critique the 1994 Taipei mayoral debate, the present study revealed that the world-wide trend of Americanized campaign culture was confirmed in the situation of Taiwan. Additionally, in comparison with other theoretical approaches to studying the 1994 Taipei mayoral debate, the present study indicated that the functional approach provided more concrete data and enabled the readers to be critical of different interpretations of campaign strategies. Last, the present study also suggested that the choosing of attacking targets should be an important focus for observing subsequent Taiwanese political debates.
