The purpose of this project is to give adolescents tools to navigate safe and responsible social media use. The negative effects that adolescents face online include: cyber-bullying, risky sexual behavior, aggression, and unhealthy peer competition (Goldstein, 2016; Hoon, Wang, & Swearer, 2015; Jasmine, Diedrichs, Vartaniana, & Halliwell, 2014; Pardun, Ladin L'Engle, & Brown, 2005). The six week project teaches adolescents the harmful effects of irresponsible social media use and develops skills in how to foster positive online relationships. The literature review covers adolescent's identity formation, how social media is being used by adolescents, the harmful effects of irresponsible social media use, and research done to support adolescents with social media. This group was created to aid adolescents in developing identity and forming healthy relationships with social media.
