The Hackman & Oldham model has been tested in several areas with additional examination needed in the manufacturing sector. This study examined the model within a manufacturing company and evaluated several of the dimensions of the model. The company examined is a large manufacturer of electric motors and the sample was taken form one plant with all three shifts sampled. The plant has a total population of 1,000 with 200 employees sampled.

The purpose of this research was to evaluate certain variables of the Hackman & Oldham model of job redesign and motivation in the manufacturing arena. This model has been evaluated in several studies that included a variety of industries. The literature indicated there was a need for additional testing of the model particularly in industries where little testing had been performed. Manufacturing was identified as one of the industries where additional testing should be conducted.

Research questions examined in this study are: (1) is there a significant relationship between skill variety and high internal work motivation, (2) is there a significant relationship between task identity and high internal work motivation, (3) is there a significant relationship between task significance and high internal work motivation, (4) is there a significant relationship between autonomy and high internal work motivation, and (5) is there a significant relationship between intrinsic job feedback and high internal work motivation? A two tailed t-test was used to test the hypotheses developed for each research question.

Results obtained from the survey rejected the null hypothesis and found that it appeared a relationship existed between the examined variables. Therefore, the researcher concluded that a significant relationship did appear to exist between skill variety and high internal work motivation, task identity and high internal work motivation, task significance and high internal work motivation, autonomy and high internal work motivation and, intrinsic job feedback and high internal work motivation.

The study indicted that the variables examined could be helpful to management as jobs are redesigned and attempts are made to improve motivation.

This study also compared results to the established norms for the variables and to one other study. Several suggestions for future research were made including one to expand the study internationally to determine what, if any, impact culture could have on the results.
